Doctor of Physical Therapy Admissions

Effective November 2, 2021, Pacific Northwest University has been granted Candidate for Accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) 3030 Potomac Ave., Suite 100, Alexandria, Virginia 22305-3085; phone:703.706.3245; email: accreditation@apta.org. If needing to contact the program/institution directly, please call 509.249.7725 or email dpt@pnwu.edu.

Candidate for Accreditation is an accreditation status affiliation with the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education that indicates the program may matriculate students in technical/professional courses. Achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status does not assure that the program will be granted Initial Accreditation.

Candidacy is considered to be an accredited status, as such, the credits and degree earned from a program with Candidacy Status are considered, by CAPTE, to be from an accredited program. Therefore, students in the charter (first) class should be eligible to take the licensure exam even if CAPTE withholds accreditation at the end of the candidacy period. That said, it is up to each state licensing agency, not CAPTE, to determine who is eligible for licensure. Information on licensing requirements should be directed to the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT; www.fsbpt.org) or specific state boards (a list of state boards and contact information is available on the FSBPT’s website.

The PNWU-SOPT Admissions Committee seeks to admit 50 students for each new class of doctor of physical therapy students which starts in the fall. PNWU-SOPT seeks students compatible with the University mission and who have the prerequisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to assure a reasonable probability of success. Applications from all qualified individuals will be considered; however, in order to meet the mission of the School of Physical Therapy, priority will be given to applicants from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, or from rural or medically underserved areas.

PTCAS then verifies the information provided on each application, a process that may take 30 days or more.  PNWU’s School of Physical Therapy will review your application only after the verification is complete by PTCAS. The PTCAS Quick Start Guide is an excellent resource to guide proper submission of an application to any DPT program.

Foreign Coursework: Coursework taken at foreign institutions must have a course-by-course evaluation for US equivalence by an evaluation service and an official copy must be sent directly from the service to PTCAS.

Physical Therapy Experience/Observation:

  • Provide evidence that you have seriously considered the profession of physical therapy as a good fit for your personal goals. Doing this may involve completing observation/shadowing of a physical therapist in practice or volunteering at a health care facility to gain a greater understanding of the field, or research into the profession in another way that fits your needs and learning style. However, it is critical that you understand and embrace the scope of work, values for care and, in particular, the opportunities for physical therapy to contribute to the health of underserved communities.

PNWU does not have a standardized recommendation form. All recommendations should be on official letterhead, signed, and dated by the writer. References must be written within two years prior to your application.

References should be submitted using Letters by Liaison in the PTCAS application. PNWU will accept two additional letters of recommendation.

All applicants invited to interview with PNWU SOPT are interviewed in groups with two panelists per group. Interview panelists are provided a list of names prior to the interview day to determine any conflict of interest.
