Providing Learner-Focused Education

Learner-focused education describes the precepting and educating characteristics that prepare the clinical environment, allow preceptors to ascertain a learner's current level, and assist a learner's advancement to the next level while aligning the learner's goals with patient care delivery.

The goal is to demonstrate a commitment to the learners' success and well-being leading to growth into their professional roles.  Specific competencies within this domain include:

  • Prepare the clinical environment, including staff, patients, and other colleagues, for the learner
  • Orient the learner to the community, local resources, and the clinical environment
  • Ascertain each learner's knowledge, skills, and attributes related to rotation expectations
  • Help learners develop learning goals aligned with patients' needs
