Parkinson's PWR Moves Class at PNWU.

PNWU Doctor of Physical Therapy Students Bring Camaraderie and Movement to Local Parkinson’s Community

Students from Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences School of Physical Therapy recently partnered with the local community to make a meaningful impact for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. As part of their commitment to hands-on learning and service, four Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students, Jose Nato Palma, Ryan Beck, Helly Patel, and Ramon Alvarez, all members of the Class of 2026, hosted a weekly exercise class designed specifically for people with Parkinson’s disease.

Before leading the sessions, the students completed specialized training through the PWR!Moves® Therapist Certification Program, a nationally recognized workshop that equips physical therapists with evidence-based strategies to improve mobility, balance, and quality of life for those affected by Parkinson’s disease. This certification prepared the students to design and deliver safe, effective, and engaging classes tailored to the unique needs of participants.

The program quickly became more than just exercise—it was a source of encouragement and connection. One participant shared, “The students encourage me to do more exercises at home. I feel their support and encouragement even when I’m not here. Their understanding really helps with the motivation.”

Another participant expressed appreciation for the students’ enthusiasm and dedication:

“The students are really a great part of this. They’re fun to work with. It’s nice to have people who are willing to step up and work with you.”

For many, the experience was transformative. “I’d like to thank the university and the students for the program and for the other classes I’ve been involved in,” said another attendee.

By combining classroom learning with real-world application, PNWU’s DPT students demonstrated the power of education in action—bringing hope, movement, and community to those who need it most.
