Graduation Requirements

Congratulations, you are in your final days of being a student doctor. PNWU will post information here to help your graduation day go smoothly. Please review the information and contact Registrar Office if you have questions, or 509.249.7888.

Information for Graduates

  • Graduates are expected to be in professional attire for all required events.
  • Graduates should arrive for the commencement ceremony, May 16, 2020, no later than 12:00 p.m. using the 4th street entrance (back stage door) of the Capitol Theatre. Please have your, wrinkle-free, graduation regalia with you including your gown, tam (cap), hood, and tassel.
  • The main entrance doors will open for guests at 12:00 p.m.
  • The ceremony will conclude at approximately 3:00 p.m. Immediately following the ceremony graduates, family members, and friends are invited to gather outside the front entrance of the Capitol Theatre for photos, and congratulations.
  • Graduates with guests that require seating accommodations should indicate on their graduation application that accommodations are needed. Please review the Venue Information for accessibility information.

Graduation Eligibility

Complete the Graduation Application by March 1, 2020.

Please verify all graduation requirements are met by monitoring your Checklist on Self-Service.

  • Add diploma mailing address on My Profile tab prior to May 1, 2020

Regalia Order

  • Graduating students are required to wear gown, hood, tam, tassel at commencement ceremony.
  • Place your regalia order with Oak Hall by April 22, 2020
    • see Academic Regalia section of this web page
  • Oak Hall sends a list of regalia orders to PNWU Registrar, the student's Checklist on Self-Service will be updated
  • If you purchase regalia from a PNWU alumni please email specifying that you have all required items.

Formal Clinical Presentation

  • Your Regional Assistant Dean will complete the evaluation for your formal clinical presentation in E*Value
  • Clinical Education will compile a report of completed presentations and Registrar will update the student's Checklist on Self-Service

Review with Regional Assistant Dean

  • Your Regional Assistant Dean will complete the evaluation for your review in E*Value 
  • Clinical Education will compile a report of completed reviews and Registrar will update the student's Checklist on Self-Service

Complete the AACOM Graduating Student Survey

  • Your response to the national survey is important for developing public policy on financing medical education
    • Individual responses are confidential, the data is used for research purposes
  • Registrar will receive a list of completed surveys and update the student's Checklist on Self-Service

Complete the PNWU-COM Graduate Exit Survey (canceled for May 2020)

  • You will receive an email from PNWU Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE) with a link to the survey on or before April 1, 2020
  • If you have questions regarding this survey or have technical difficulties contact PNWU OIE at
  • Registrar will receive a list of completed surveys and update the student's Checklist on Self-Service

Complete Federal Student Loan Exit Counseling

  • Financial Aid will receive a list of completed counseling and Registrar will update the student's Checklist on Self-Service

Financial Obligations

  • Pay any outstanding charges on your student account using the Make Payment button on the Finances tab of Self-Service

Dates to Remember

  • March 1, 2020 - Deadline to complete the Graduation Application
  • March 17, 2020 - Deadline to order guest hooder academic regalia
  • April 1, 2020 - Complete the PNWU-COM graduate exit survey
  • April 1, 2020 - Deadline to submit nomination for Donna Jones Moritsugu Award
  • April 22, 2020 - Deadline to order regalia
  • April 27, 2020 - Capitol Theatre will begin mailing or emailing tickets
  • May 1, 2020 - Enter diploma address in Self-Service
  • May 14, 2020 - Financial presentation for graduates and residents
  • May 15, 2020 - Graduate luncheon and awards, individual regalia photos, exit session, and rehearsal
  • May 16, 2020 - Military promotion and commencement
  • June, 2020 - Licensing change to your PNWU account on Office 365 to reflect your alumni status, back up your OneDrive and SharePoint files to another location prior to June.

Graduation Audits/Academic Plans

Graduation Audits/Academic Plans are uploaded to the File Manager area of Progress IQ for fourth-year students, regional assistant deans, and site administrators to review and coincide with the Regional Assistant Dean Reviews during the following time frames:

  • September through November
  • March through April, final audits will be completed prior to graduation, early graduation application completion and estimated end of rotation date help prioritize final audits

These audits are a combination of the Self-Service Academic Plan and the E*Value anticipated schedule, both can be reviewed by students. 

  • Questions regarding E*Value schedule should be directed to regional site administrator or regional clerkship administrator
  • Discrepancies in courses/transcript should be directed to

Financial Aid Requirements

Graduates must complete Federal Student Loan Exit Counseling if you are a student loan borrower while at PNWU or before. You will receive information specific to your federal student loan portfolio.

Graduates must also attend the student loan exit session on Friday, May 15 from 1:00 - 2:50 p.m. (a list of prerequisites and details will be available by May 1). A financial counselor with student loan expertise for physicians will be presenting as well as offering one-on-one counseling, watch for specifics closer to graduation.

Additional Financial Aid Modules for Osteopathic Graduates for your use:

  • Topics on repayment strategies, income-driven repayment and forgiveness, and residency financial decisions
  • The modules are presented by an independent student loan consultant under contract with AACOM

Be sure to nominate a partner of any graduating fourth-year osteopathic medical student for the Donna Jones Moritsugu Award. Send the nomination form and letter to Financial Aid by April 1.

Established in 1993 this award is in memory of Donna Jones Moritsugu, wife of Dr. Kenneth P. Moritsugu, Former Deputy Surgeon General of the United States, who was killed in an automobile accident. The award honors and recognizes the partners of graduating osteopathic medical students who best exemplify the role of any professional's partner by providing immeasurable support and who are often content to bask in the reflected light of their partner, for their unwavering dedication and support. These individuals are the "Wind Beneath Our Wings".

Academic Regalia

Academic regalia (tam, hood, and gown all included in the purchased package) is required for participation in the commencement ceremony. Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences requires students to comply with professional dress standards, which include no modification of the tam, gown, or hood.

To order your regalia, visit the Oak Hall site and order by Wednesday, April 22, 2020.  Regalia will be shipped directly to the student.

  • Regalia must be wrinkle-free, hang it as soon as received, for the commencement ceremony

If you acquire academic regalia from a former PNWU graduate it must fit, be clean, free from damage, in your possession by April 21, and conform to the purchase package provided by Oak Hall. 

Guest Hooders will order their rental regalia, by visiting the Oak Hall site and ordering by Tuesday, March 17, 2020.  Regalia will be shipped directly to PNWU. Guest hooders will be required to return their rental regalia at a station located in front of the Capitol Theatre after the commencement ceremony.

Commencement Ceremony

The commencement ceremony will be held at the Capitol Theatre. The historic theatre is a performing arts venue which has a rich heritage and is an original 1920’s Pantages style theatre. The 1,500 seat Grand Lady is dedicated to showcasing the best live performing artists on both professional and community levels. 

Based on current estimates for attendance, we expect to be able to accommodate everyone, even those students expecting large groups. There will be Capitol Theatre ushers available to assist with seating.


Fixed seating allows enough seats for each graduate to have eight assigned seats. Graduates will be randomized and assigned tickets with efforts made to group the seats in close proximity. Seats not needed by graduates will be available for unticketed seating on a first-come-first serve basis.

Guest hooder and seating accommodations count towards the graduates assigned seats.

Children’s Area:

The Robertson Room, located on the lower level of the theatre, is provided as a children’s area for those who want to wiggle.  An adult must remain with the child at all times.  This is not a drop off child care area. For your convenience the ceremony will be streaming live to be viewed in the Robertson Room.
