PNWU Student Katie Buckman Helps Raise Over $8,000 for Yakima UGM Medical Clinic
"There are no words to express the joy and gratitude I feel in seeing how many people came together to support this vital community resource," said PNWU OMS II Katie Buckman, reflecting on the success of her recent efforts to raise money for Yakima's Union Gospel Mission Medical Clinic.
On Friday, March 1, Buckman, along with Bale Breaker Brewing Company, hosted Ubuntu Community Pint Night in support of YUGM's medical clinic. In the end, her efforts -- which also included a self-started and independently promoted Facebook fundraiser -- helped the clinic to raise a total of $8,934 in less than one month.
Additionally, thanks to Katie's hard work and tireless dedication, the event also succeeded in raising awareness and recruiting additional volunteer providers to the clinic.
“As a future physician, Ms. Buckman understands her responsibility to help elevate the community, and we are very proud of her," said PNWU President Dr. Michael Lawler. "YUGM is a critical community resource and we are privileged to work with them.”
"I am overwhelmed with gratitude and joy to see the community's overwhelming response to learning that one of their most vital resources was under threat of closure," said Buckman. "This clinic was built by the generosity of this community, is maintained by the generosity of this community, and was rescued by the generosity of this community. The people of Yakima are the epitome of what a community should and needs to be -- now more than ever. I am truly honored to be a part of this amazing community and hope to one day serve as a physician here in Yakima."
