DPT FAQ's

Frequent asked questions regarding the pending DPT program at PNWU.

DPT FAQ's

Why Now?
  • The shortage of rehabilitation professionals including physical therapy has been well documented in Washington state including Yakima County.
  • The 7/243 DPT programs in the NW are not producing enough graduates to meet the demands. The NW produces 280 physical therapy graduates per year with more than 800 openings for physical therapists.
Why PNWU?
  • The DPT and COM programs have many similarities - including compatible resources - thus creating an advantageous synergy.
  • The technology being used at PNWU will prepare physical therapists for healthcare delivery models of tomorrow.
  • Interprofessional education at PNWU is active and growing on campus and through clinical partnerships across the Northwest.
  • Other available resources through the College of Osteopathic Medicine include the simulation center, anatomy laboratory, large lecture and lab rooms.
What is the Current Student Demand?
  • Physical Therapy programs nationwide report 560 qualified applicants for a class size of 46 students. Applicants continue to increase, without an increase in spaces available to support those students.
  • Physical Therapy continues to be ranked high for health care professions.
I Am a Potential Applicant, What Does this Mean for Me?

Because we are very early in our planning process, we cannot actively recruit students for the program. We encourage you to check back frequently for updates on our progress.

How Can I Participate?

There are many ways to participate in the early stages of planning. You can:

  1. Provide feedback about your thoughts and plans for the DPT program.
  2. Contact Dr. Peggy Trueblood to have her come and speak with your staff. We are gathering information on the needs/goals of the community from a variety of resources.
