Demographic Information

We have multiple apartment complexes in the city, as well as rental homes available.  Previous students have always been able to find affordable housing in our region.

We have been training students since the start of PNWU.

Preceptor/Rotation Information

4th year electives that have been successful in this region depending on availability:
We have quite a few 4th year rotations available in our region.  We currently have Cardiology, NICU, Podiatry, Wound Care, ENT, ICU, Pulmonology, GI, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Hem/Onc, Infectious Disease, PM&R, Anesthesiology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Radiology, and Urology.  We are always adding new electives as new providers come into the area or as students find interest in different areas.

Number of Preceptors credentialed with PNWU to teach CORE rotations:
We have 27 main preceptors in Billings, Bozeman, Lewistown, and Cody, WY that teach core rotations.  However, we do have additional core preceptors in other regions (more rural) if you have an interest.

D.O. preceptors in the region (approx.):  9

M.D. preceptors in the region (approx.):  18

Rotations that provide inpatient experience:
We have inpatient experience in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, OBGYN, Family Medicine, and Behavioral Medicine.

Rotation challenges in the region based on availability:
The only rotation that we seem to be challenged with is OBGYN.  We do have providers in Billings, and in the past have been able to accommodate most students.  In the instance that we are not able to accommodate them between our Billings, Bozeman, or Cody sites, we have had students rotate in the Great Falls region.

Do students/learners from other schools rotate in the region?

Is there integration of other schools with PNWU students?
Yes, all learners participate in grand rounds each week and work on the inpatient teams together.

Residencies available in the region that PNWU students are involved in (didactics, rotations, etc.):
Yes, our students are involved with the Montana Family Medicine Residency and the Billings Clinic. Internal Medicine Residency.  Students are able to attend grand rounds/didactics with them and also rotate with them during Internal Medicine and Family Medicine rotations.

Opportunities to practice OMM:
Yes. During your OMM rotation with our Regional Assistant Dean, Dr. Prewitt and her spouse, you will be performing OMM on patients.  We also offer students the opportunity to learn techniques and practice during our didactic sessions.

Didactics Information

Didactic Information:
Didactics are held every Friday afternoon.  They begin with a grand rounds presentation at 12:15 pm at Billings Clinic, which host different presenters and topics each week.  Both providers and staff are invited to attend these presentations.  Immediately following grand rounds, we move to a different room where our didactics are held.  They consist of presentations by our Regional Assistant Dean, other providers from the area, and other topics such as financial planning.

Other learning opportunities in addition to PNWU didactics include:
We also have continuing education opportunities for students to attend with other providers.

Core (3rd year) rotations available within driving distance (1 hour or 50 miles) of the didactics site?
Yes, every effort is made to have all rotations within the Billings area.  Some rotations, mainly OB, may have to be completed in either Cody, WY (which is about 1.5 hours from Billings), Bozeman (which is about 2 hours from Billings) or one of our other core sites.
