A quarterly update from the School of Dental Medicine.
In this issue:
Dean’s Message
Is it already November? Wow! It seems like just yesterday that our inaugural class started. They are now a month away from completing the fall semester.
It has been a very busy autumn for the team. Besides all of the teaching in the D1 fall semester program, the team is preparing for the spring term, recruiting new faculty for the main campus team, recruiting and interviewing students for the Class of 2030 (we have received over 850 applications this cycle) preparing to welcome our first group of clinical faculty in January, and in the midst of all this, packing up our offices in Iron Horse Lodge and move into our new space in “the building formally known as DOT” (hopeful some get the Prince reference!).
I hope you enjoy this quarterly update and look for our next one in mid/late January 2026.

SDM Partner Spotlight
Pierce College Dental Hygiene Program
Pierce College Dental Hygiene and Pacific Northwest University Partner to Expand Dental Education Opportunities
The Pierce College Dental Hygiene (PCDH) program is partnering with Pacific Northwest University (PNWU) to advance student success and strengthen their relationships with universities to develop educational opportunities. This collaboration creates a transformative pathway for graduates of the PCDH program empowering them to pursue an advanced degree in dentistry leading to a doctorate in dental medicine.

The partnership between PCDH and PNWU marks a pivotal advancement in expanding access to dental education and career progression. PCDH graduates will have the opportunity to transition smoothly into the PNWU Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program. This initiative reflects a commitment to delivering innovative educational pathways.
Graduates of the PCDH program with a Bachelor of Applied Science Dental Hygiene (BASDH) degree are equipped to provide high-quality preventive, therapeutic, and restorative care within the parameters of state practice regulations. Gaining access to the DMD program allows these highly skilled oral health professionals to elevate their expertise to new heights.
The impact of this partnership goes beyond individual student achievements. By establishing a seamless educational link between dental hygiene and dentistry, PNWU and PCDH are addressing the increasing demand for proficient dental practitioners in the region. Graduates of the PCDH program will benefit from an expedited pathway to an advanced degree while being well-prepared to serve their communities with enhanced oral healthcare knowledge. PNWU founding dean for the School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Fotinos Panagakos, was the visionary behind launching this partnership. PCDH’s Program Director, Tammy Sanderson, has teamed up with PNWU to ensure that students have access to expanded opportunities. “This partnership is a forward-thinking collaboration providing educational advancement, student empowerment, and demonstrates a commitment from PNWU and PCDH to training a skilled workforce dedicated to enhancing the oral health in our community” stated Sanderson.

SDM Construction Update
Construction of our three community clinics is progressing. In Tacoma, the Sea Mar team is in the midst of renovating the building. PNWU President Dr Mittelman visited the site earlier this month and received a tour from Sea Mar Dental Director Dr Alex Narvaez. In Kennewick and Yakima, the framing of the new clinics is almost complete, just in time for the winter weather. All three projects are on schedule.
As mentioned above, the team moved into our new offices at the beginning of the month. It is wonderful to have the team finally all together in one space! Everyone is getting settled and comfortable in this beautiful new space. Special thanks to the PNWU Facilities team for making the move as painless as possible!

SDM In the Community
ADEA Fall Meeting
Seven SDM team members attend the ADEA Fall Meeting in Colorado Springs, CO.
One of those members was Dr. Gary Pape, who attended the day-and-a-half conference with academic deans from dental schools across the US. The conference began with a presentation of the recently passed congressional bill on professional school federal loan limits and the proposed efforts by the American Dental Education Association to advocate to oppose these limits for healthcare professional students.
The academic deans participated in a discussion about helping struggling learners (i.e., remediation), which included survey data exploring underlying factors, types of struggles, and recommendations for best practices.
The workshop concluded with an interactive presentation on best coaching practices. The presenter contrasted coaching with mentoring and provided attendees with opportunities to role-play various scenarios. A concluding recommendation was to “coach the person, not the problem.”
In addition to the educational presentations, there were many opportunities for networking and informal conversations regarding strategies to navigate common educational issues.
