Free event offers education, resources, and real solutions for patients, families, and future healthcare providers
Yakima, WA — On Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU) will host the First Ever Yakima Valley Diabetes Symposium, a free, community-centered event designed to empower individuals living with diabetes and those who care for them.
Hosted in partnership with Wellness House, the symposium will take place in the auditorium of PNWU’s Butler-Haney Hall, and will feature local experts in diabetes management, nutrition, mental health, and exercise, including:
- Dr. Kathaleen Briggs Early, PhD, RDN, CDCES — Pacific Northwest University | Diabetes Overview
- Julie Suckow, RDN, LD, CDCES — 509 Nutrition & Diabetes Care | Know Your Numbers
- Stephanie Etherington, RD, CD, CDCES — Tandem Diabetes | Best Practices
- Amy Zook, MS in CMHC — Wellness House | Stress Management Exercises
- Jamie Walker, PMHNP — Valley Psychological Services | Self Care & Mental Health
- Natalie Harris, BSc, FAFS, EP-C, PN1 & Juice Plus + Partner — Mama Rae Health & Performance | Exercise for Glucose Stability
“Diabetes isn’t just about avoiding sugary foods — it’s about navigating life,” said Dr. Kathaleen Briggs Early, PNWU nutrition professor, diabetes educator, and keynote speaker.
“We want attendees to walk away with practical tools, confidence, and the knowledge that Yakima does have resources to help — right here at home.”
Why Yakima — Why Now?
- Yakima County’s diabetes prevalence is 12.6% — significantly higher than Washington’s state average of 8.9%.
- Nearby Adams County faces some of the highest rates in the state at 15%.
- November marks National Diabetes Month, with World Diabetes Day recognized globally on November 14.
“This symposium is about access, connection, and hope,” said Dr. Briggs Early. “Diabetes affects nearly every family in this region. When people understand how to manage it, they live longer, fuller lives.”
“Bringing the community onto our campus helps demystify PNWU,” added Dr. Briggs Early.
“We’re not just training future providers — we’re actively trying to improve the health of Yakima Valley residents today.”
