ACCOMMODATION

PNWU reasonably accommodates students with disabilities, who are otherwise qualified for admission and can meet the minimal technical standards for the academic program as stated in the student catalog, with or without accommodations. The ADA defines a person with a disability as a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity. This includes people who have a record of such an impairment, even if they do not currently have a disability. It also includes individuals who do not have a disability but are regarded as having a disability. Accommodations and services for students with disabilities are determined on an individualized case-by-case basis using an interactive process. The Director of Student Success and Disability Services (ods@pnwu.edu, 509.249.7912) works closely with students and the University in consultation with academic counselors, faculty, academic administration, and community providers as necessary to determine disability eligibility, reasonable accommodations, and to design and individual plan for student accommodations. Determinations regarding whether reasonable accommodations will cause a fundamental alteration to a particular program or course are made using reasoned deliberation, including a diligent assessment of available options.

PNWU welcomes the opportunity to meet with you to discuss your application, potential accommodations, and program requirements. Please go to the Disability Services webpage for details on all steps in the process and links to the application form and information on documentation requirements.

We encourage early disclosure or inquiry about disability related resources to allow sufficient time to coordinate accommodation needs. During the process, if you have any questions regarding the status of your request do not hesitate to contact the Office of Disability Service, ods@pnwu.edu or 509.249.7912.

Grievance Policy

PNWU is committed to providing equal and integrated access for students with disabilities. This resolve is grounded not only in the law, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act, but also in the commitment PNWU has to the inclusion of all members of the community. This grievance process is intended to provide for the prompt and equitable resolution of complaints involving discrimination based on disability.

Any student enrolled in any PNWU program who believes that they have been discriminated against based on disability (including but not limited to alleged inaccessibility of a PNWU program or activity, disparate treatment, discriminatory impact of any PNWU policy, disability harassment, and disability accommodation) may seek the assistance of the 504 Coordinator, Director of Student Success & Disability Services (or designee) through the filing of a disability grievance under this process. If a student believes they have been denied equal access in the form of accommodations, auxiliary aids, or other modifications, they may pursue an appeal.
