A-Z list of Publicly Available Datasets
American Community Survey – Data produced from a United States Census Bureau nationwide survey of 40+ questions covering demographics, social status, housing, and economics.
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services – Tracks data related to program beneficiaries and providers, as well as the cost and use of the programs themselves. Maintained and provided by the federal agency.
Common Metabolic Diseases Knowledge Portal – Created by the Accelerated Medicines Partnership (AMP), a consortium of private companies, government agencies, and nonprofits. Search for data by specific gene characteristics or diseases.
Data Commons – Google-based, publicly accessible data provided by third-party organizations. All results include information about the datasets, and an option to download the data.
Data.Gov Archive Search – Created by Harvard’s Library Innovation Lab, with over 300,000 publicly accessible datasets, sourced from various federal and state agencies. Search by keywords, organization, publisher, or bureau of origin.
Data.Gov – Main repository for all of the US government’s publicly available data. Search by keyword or browse datasets by organization or geographic region.
Data Rescue Project Portal – Crowdsourced emergency backup for publicly accessible datasets at risk for removal. Search by keyword, category, or office of origin. Includes original URLs.
Global Health Data Exchange – Hosted by the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). Data from IHME and third-party institutions. Access to data varies, depending on the source.
Google Dataset Search – This search tool was created by Google. Users can search for datasets by using keywords, filtering results by formats, rights, and cost.
Harvard Dataverse – Repository created and maintained by Harvard University. Searchable by keywords with multiple filter options. Data from large organizations and laboratories, as well as individual researchers.
HHS Open Data Catalog – Similar to Data.Gov, but dedicated to data produced by the Department of Health and Human Services. In addition to datasets, users can search for maps and official documents.
ImmuneSpace – Created and supported by the Human Immunology Project Consortium (HIPC), which is funded by NIH. Users explore data via study, participant, assessment, or event characteristics.
Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) – A part of the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. Database focused on socio-economic factors impacting health outcomes.
Kids Count Data Center – Part of the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Information on children and childhood welfare, organized by demographics, socioeconomic factors, and health markers (with Washington data from Children’s Alliance).
National Cancer Institute – Over 100 datasets and databases included, provided by the NIH’s National Cancer Institute. Access to data varies, depending on the source.
National Immunization Surveys – CDC-collected immunization data, managed by NORC at University of Chicago. Surveys may be conducted weekly or annually. View survey details at CDC.Gov.
National Library of Medicine Dataset Catalog – NIH resource currently curated from 11 independent repositories, with ClinicalTrials.gov to be added soon. Navigation and page layout is similar to PubMed.
National Survey on Drug Use and Health – Annual survey that tracks drug use, mental health, and other related issues. Raw NSDUH data can be viewed in SAMHSA’s data collections.
OpenNeuro – Stanford University-based platform, supported by a combination of governmental, educational, and private institutions. Browse public datasets by imaging techniques, or search by keyword.
PolicyMap – (Only available on PNWU campus) A Geographic Information System (GIS) that aggregates many indicators from over 170 sources. Users can combine multiple factors into detailed, color-coded maps and spreadsheets.
Rural Health Information Hub – From University of North Dakota’s Center for Rural Health, with funding from the US HRSA. Extensive list of rural health research resources, including a “Data Sources and Tools” table for quick reference.
Washington Office of Financial Management: County DataWashington Office of Financial Management: County Data – Managed by Washington’s Office of Financial Management. Researchers can use this to quickly review state and federal-level data sources for each county, organized by topic.
Washington State DOH Data & Statistical Reports – Lists all data and statistical reports available through the Washington Department of Health. May require an email request to access some content.
