Rehired Employees: Reinstatement of Sick Leave and Service Credit

Policy: 
Subject to the conditions outlined below, former employees who are rehired within 12 months of their separation date may previously accrued unused sick leave restored, and prior years of service recognized for service recognition purposes only.

Eligibility for Rehire:
Employees who voluntarily resign from PNWU are eligible for rehire if they had a satisfactory work record while employed, regardless of the length of the break in service.

Sick Leave Restoration:

  • If no sick leave payout was received at the time of separation, the entire unused sick leave balance will be restored upon rehire.
  • If a partial payout was received, only the unused portion that was not paid out will be restored upon rehire.
  • Restored sick leave is available for immediate use upon rehire.

Service Credit Adjustment:

  • Previous years of service will be counted only towards service recognition.

Additional Provisions:

  • Eligibility for sick leave restoration and/or service recognition does not guarantee rehire into the same job classification or pay level.
  • Prior job experience will be considered when determining salary placement upon rehire.

Definitions:

  • Break in Service: The period between an employee’s separation date and their subsequent rehire date at PNWU.
  • Rehire: The return of a former employee to active employment at PNWU following a separation.
  • Separation Date: The official last day of employment with PNWU before a voluntary resignation or other separation.
  • Satisfactory Work Record: A performance and conduct history during prior employment that meets PNWU’s standards of acceptable performance and behavior, as determined by Human Resources
  • Sick Leave Payout: A monetary payment made to an eligible employee for unused sick leave hours at the time of separation, in accordance with PNWU policy.
  • Service Credit: The total number of years of employment at PNWU that may be recognized for purposes of service recognition, but not for benefit eligibility, retirement, or other employment-related accruals.
  • Service Recognition: Acknowledgement of an employee’s length of service at PNWU for purposes such as awards, recognition events, or other non-monetary acknowledgements
