PNWU Students Participate in Trauma-Informed Care Conference

Dental students from Pacific Northwest University recently joined the Yakama Nation Behavioral Health Services’ Seventh Annual Trauma-Informed Care Conference, gaining valuable lessons in compassion, resilience, and community engagement.

“This approach allowed students to apply their knowledge through active participation in real-world health issues.”

“As part of my Community Health course in the School of Dental Medicine, I had an opportunity to take the classroom off campus to create a powerful learning experience rooted in community engagement,” said Dr. Maxine Brings-Him-Back Janis, Associate Professor in the School of Dental Medicine. “This approach allowed students to apply their knowledge through active participation in real-world health issues in the context of trauma-informed care and the integration of cultural protective factors—an inspiring example of education in action.”

The experience not only deepened students’ understanding of trauma-informed care, but also highlighted the importance of connecting with and serving diverse communities.

“What an incredible group of dental students!” Dr. Brings-Him-Back Janis added. “They were proudly recognized by the master of ceremonies as representatives of Pacific Northwest University, earning well-deserved acknowledgment for their presence and participation.”
