White Coat Ceremony

Dear Student Doctors,

We are excited to announce that the upcoming White Coat Ceremony will be held on June 2, 2023 for the Class of 2025. This traditional ceremony is a celebration and recognition of your transition from pre-clinical to clinical education as you enter your third-year rotations.  The keynote speaker will be Marie Cadwell Meyer, DO, Assistant Dean for Clinical Education, PNWU-COM Class of 2012.

This ceremony is a heralded rite of passage for medical students. The White Coat has come to represent the trust people put in us and the responsibilities it entails. It is a time-honored symbol of the profession of medicine. Each student is “coated” by a member of the faculty or an alumnus from the College of Osteopathic Medicine. The ceremony at the end of the second year recognizes the transition from the classroom to the patient care environment and your advancement as a valued member of the health care workforce. We invite you to accept this “cloak of compassion and humility” to guide your lives as physicians.

I look forward to seeing you as we celebrate this significant occasion.

Sincerely,
Thomas A. Scandalis, DO

Dean and Chief Academic Officer
College of Osteopathic Medicine

What to Wear

When attending a white coat ceremony, remember that you should dress in a professional manner.

The most common form of dress for men is a shirt and tie. Typically, a suit or sports coat is not necessary. Women wear dresses, suits, or a blouse with a skirt or slacks.  If you are not sure of what to wear, attending in business casual dress would be appropriate.

Please refrain from casual attire.  Please do not wear jeans, sneakers, flip flops, t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, mini-skirts, or any other casual clothing.

The ceremony is held in the presence of faculty, administration, and family members and is considered a rite of passage.  Therefore, it is important to dress properly for this occasion as it is a very special day for those being honored.
